On Friday mornings in Department H at the Van Nuys courthouse, teams of two experienced probate lawyers appear for three hours to volunteer their services as settlement officers. The team helps litigants settle disputes which are set for hearing or narrow the issues for determination by the court. No other probate department of the Los Angeles Superior Court offers this program, which is made possible by the volunteer efforts of probate attorneys of the SFVBA Probate & Estate Planning Section. To qualify as a probate settlement officer, the attorney must have at least five years of probate experience and must be willing to commit to volunteer one Friday every six months.
