PUBLIC SERVICE

Blanket the Homeless

As part of its ongoing public service commitment, the SFVBA established Blanket the Homeless in 1995 as a tangible means by which the legal profession could make a worthwhile contribution to the people in the community it serves. Since its inception, the program has provided over 15,000 blankets, sleeping bags, and parkas to local nonprofit shelters housing the homeless, battered women and children, and runaways. The blankets are distributed in December to a dozen San Fernando Valley shelters, including MEND, L.A. Family Housing, Hillview Mental Health Center, Haven Hills, SFV Mental Health Center, Women's Care Cottage, Loaves and Fishes, and BRIDGES. In 1999, Blanket the Homeless was expanded to include volunteer attorneys offering the homeless free legal counsel at the distribution site, L.A. Family Housing. Funds to purchase the blankets are raised by the SFVBA through member's dues checkoff, law firm and corporate sponsorships, and fund raising events.

Family Law Mediators

Family law attorneys serve as volunteer mediators in the Van Nuys and San Fernando Courts.  Mediators must be proficient with the Dissomaster software in order to compute spousal and child support.

To serve as a volunteer family law mediator contact the following:

Law Day

The SFVBA hosts Ask-a-Lawyer legal clinics throughout the year in conjunction with Law Day and other community events.  Volunteer attorneys provide free 10-minutes consultations to the public.  For members who can act, SFVBA volunteers perform skits based on familiar fairy tale characters at area elementary schools to teach students about our legal system.  To volunteer click on Law Day and send us an email.

Valley Associated Settlement Team Program

VAST teams plaintiffs and defense attorneys with judicial officers to conduct mandatory settlement conferences to help rid the San Fernando Valley Courts of their oldest civil cases.  Since its inception in 1994, hundreds of volunteers have settled over a thousand cases. All volunteer attorneys must have at least five years experience practicing law.  To volunteer,  contact Rosie at (818) 227-0490 ext. 100 or aileen@sfvba.org or Liz Post at ext. 101 or epost@sfvba.org.
