Intellectually property is a legal term that includes several different areas of the law. Each of the areas can be quite complex and usually requires legal advice and assistance if you want to take full advantage of the many protections offered under intellectual property law.

A patent for an invention is the grant of a property right to the inventor for 20 years issued by the Patent and Trademark Office. What is granted is not the right to make, use, offer for sale, sell or import, but the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, selling or importing the invention.

A copyright © is a protection given to writers, composers, and other artists for various artistic and intellectual works that have either been published or not. A copyright are registered by the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. A copyright is a legal right that protects the "form of material expression," but does not necessarily the idea behind the art form. See this is complicated and you need to understand exactly what of your creations you can protect and how, and for how long.

A trademark is a word Xerox®; a name, Kleenex® a symbol or device (logos for Nike®, Apple Computer®, for examples) which is used to indicate the source of the product and to distinguish the product from others.

A trade secret is commercially valuable information that is confidential. Examples would include technical and marketing data, financial information, and undisclosed inventions.
